Reception 2022 Admissions

Application for Reception 2022

The staff of all of the Schools in Frays Academy Trust recognise that choosing a Primary School for your child is an important decision. This year we are delighted to be able offer the opportunity to view the St Matthew's CE Primary School. To book a visit for either Monday 18th October 2021 (AM) or Monday 6th December 2021 (PM), please call Jo Harris - Admissions Officer on 01895 462352 (Weds, Thurs or Fri 8:30am - 3pm).

Each school in the Trust has its own individuality while sharing the common ethos founded on the Christian principles of respect for one another, honesty and self-reflection. Although a Christian based Academy Trust, all of the schools welcome applications for children of all faiths, or none. We are respectful of everyone’s differences and celebrate this diversity.

St Matthew’s CE Primary School has been part of Yiewsley since 1872, and has gained a reputation in the area for delivering a high standard of education, taking into account the national requirements and the needs of the local community. After a disappointing Ofsted report in 2018, the School has addressed all areas and is working hard to ensure that the ‘Outstanding’ rating is regained in the future.  The appointment of a new Head of School in 2018 has allowed the school to move forward in a more dynamic and relevant way. The School Improvement Plan for the Early Years highlights the development of phonics and reading teaching, recognising these are the foundation of a child’s progress.

The school encourages children to reflect on their beliefs and learn the meaning and significance of faith. There is a close relationship with the Parish Church of St Matthew on Yiewsley High Street, with the children attending a weekly whole school worship, and using the Church for termly productions. Children are encouraged to recognise Christian values and show compassion to all. The Christian ethos of the school is promoted in a fully inclusive way, being respectful of all faiths followed by pupils of the school and, as such, all pupils are expected to participate in all areas of school life.

In Reception, the concept of ‘Learning Through Play’ is used to develop our pupils’ knowledge in 7 curriculum areas. These 7 areas are divided into 3 prime areas, and 4 specific areas. The 3 prime areas are Personal, Social and Emotional development, Physical development, and Communication and Language development. The children explore these areas through practical, play based, activities set up in the classroom and the outside area which change regularly, according to the topics being covered. The 4 specific areas are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. There are ‘carpet sessions’ to focus on the teaching of basic maths and literacy skills to each class as a whole, which are then practised in small groups with a teacher. Every child’s individual progress is constantly monitored to ensure they are ready for the transition into Year 1, when a more formal style of education begins. Parents or carers have regular opportunities to come into class to share their children’s daily experiences, by attending Soft Start / Finish events and there is also a Grandparent’s Day, when older generations can join in the fun. The children will have Homework activities to support the work done in class which will include learning and practising phonics or tricky words, number games, and ‘craft’ tasks – making things related to the current topic. In addition to this, every child will have a reading book which is changed weekly and sent home daily for you to enjoy with your child and involve you in their education. We encourage 10 minutes daily reading practice at home.

St Matthew’s has two Reception classes of 30 children in each, in line with Government guidance. The two classes share a large classroom with its own child-sized toilet facilities, and access to an enclosed outside area which is an exciting extension to the classroom.

At all Frays Academy Trust school there is after-school care provided by an external supplier – Aktiva. Their staff collect the children from class and look after them up to 6pm, providing a healthy snack and drink, and offering a varied selection of activities. Parents make the arrangements directly with the company, who will provide more information at our welcome meeting for new parents in the summer term.

If St Matthew’s CE Primary School is included as one of your preferences on the London Borough of Hillingdon’s school application form, you will be prompted to supply a ‘Supplementary Information Form’ (SIF). This form is available on the school’s website and is a reference form, completed by your Christian Minister, to confirm regular attendance to a Christian Church. Worshippers of other faiths, or none, do not need to supply this form, and their applications will be considered based on the distance from the school to the home address, prioritising children with siblings already attending or any detailed medical needs. St Matthew’s CE Primary School is regularly oversubscribed, although for September 2021 only 59 places were offered. More details of the allocation of places can be found on the School’s Admissions Policy which is available on the website. A review of admissions to Reception for September 2021 shows that 7 places were offered to children who provided a SIF, 15 children already have siblings attending the school and the remaining 37 were offered their places based on the distance from the school to the home address.

Please take the time to explore our website where you find plenty of information, but if you have any questions please call Jo Harris – Admissions Officer, Frays Academy Trust on 01895 462352, any Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
