PE Curriculum Vision

For all children to access and enjoy Physical Education to help them  become fit for life.

St. Matthew's is proud to be a partner with real PE and is a real legacy school that strives to create and develop a Physical Education experience that develops the whole child.

Not only are we on a mission to get our children to lead a more active lifestyle our Physical Education lessons will be centred around the child to enable them to be successful not only during PE but also later in life.

Our PE curriculum is designed to provide every child with an opportunity to reach their physical, social and emotional potential. It allows them to discover the capabilities of their bodies, develop an in-depth understanding of the importance of physical education and will give them ample opportunities to explore skills that will aide them throughout their life.

St. Matthews has invested in the real PE programme that we felt has matched our vision and the needs of all of our children. It focuses on 6 key areas that we feel are essential in the development in children as they grow and learn. The 6 key areas are shown below:

  1. Physical- for all children to be able to effectively transfer skills and movements across a range of activities. For all children to perform a variety of skills consistently and effectively in challenging or competitive situations.
  2. Health and Fitness- for all children to be able to explain how individuals need different types and levels of fitness to be more effective in their activity. For all children to be able to explain the importance of physical activity and how long to exercise to keep healthy.
  3. Creative- for all children to be able to use a variety of movements to respond in an imaginative way adapting and adjusting their skills, movements or tactics.
  4. Cognitive- for all children to be able to review, analyse and evaluate their own strengths and areas of development. For all children to be able to read and react to different game situations as they develop.
  5. Social- for all children to be able to involve others and motivate others to perform. For all children to be able to give and receive feedback to improve their own performance.
  6. Personal- for all children to be able to create their own learning journey. For all children to be able to see all new challenges as opportunities to learn and develop.

 

In EYFS the real PE legacy encourages pupils to participate in Physical Education through the use of visuals and stories. This will not only help promote that children can have fun when being physically active but will work on their communication and language skills, being more spatially aware and support their Personal, Social and Emotional development.

In KS1 pupils should continue to develop basic fundamental movement skills to become more competent and confident. They will have ample opportunities to access a range of activities that extend their agility, balance and coordination. KS1 pupils will also engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities through increasingly challenging situations.

In KS2 pupils should continue to apply and develop a range of skills, learning how to use them in various ways and link the sequences to different movements. This will help promote them to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with not only themselves but with each other. They will develop an understanding on how to improve different activities in sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
