At St Matthews we believe that communication is the cornerstone of all human interaction. We live in a fast-moving global community, where much of that communication happens online and not always face to face. We believe that information technology is now a fundamental part of everyday life, and as such, should be something that is taught thoroughly and in depth. This, we feel, will enable the children of St. Matthews to flourish, both in St. Matthews, and when it comes time to graduate into secondary school and beyond.
Our curriculum incorporates many elements of computing, ranging from internet and computer safety to coding and creating databases. We have chosen key components of ICT skills, such as typing skills, accessing and saving documents and coding, in order to give our pupils the foundational skills to use ICT in whatever path they may choose. This also includes identifying and understanding the importance of e-safety and many practical experiences of coding, which enable them to understand what coding is and how to use it outside of a classroom environment. We have implemented and developed skills we feel would relate well to different age groups, starting with foundational skills (what is coding) to a more specific task orientated understanding (creating our own codes) We also give pupils the opportunity to use key computer programmes such as Microsoft Office as well gaining an understanding of social media with our use of DB Primary.
We believe it is essential for the children to gain confidence when using computers and the internet, and to constantly build upon this confidence as they progress through the school. Our vision is for each child to leave St. Matthews completely versed in the key areas of computing (typing, accessing and saving files, coding) and with the potential and confidence to develop these skills further throughout their education and future careers. We want them to understand how their new found confidence within ICT can strengthen and enhance their life, even after school has finished. We aspire towards creating outstanding learners who have gained independence and are motivated to continue with their learning and computing practices even after school ends.
